Vauhini Vara, journalist and author of "Ghosts", "Searches: Selfhood in the Digital Age", and the novel "The Immortal King Rao" (Pulitzer Prize finalist 2023), reminds us that among the "ghosts” inhabiting AI-generated texts are the commercial interests of the small number of private companies behind the models we use.
